Pets in the World Heritage Area

Because the land in the World Heritage Area is managed by a number of different agencies the rules on pets vary across Shark Bay. The Department of Parks and Wildlife, which manages much of the land area, has a policy that pets are not permitted in most national parks, nature reserves, marine parks and marine nature reserves. Visually impaired people with guide dogs can take their dogs into any Parks and Wildlife managed area.

Generally the commercial areas such as Monkey Mia Resort allow people to bring their pets as long as they are restrained. Use the table below to see where your pet can and can’t be taken.

Why are pets not allowed in some areas?

There are many reasons for restricting dogs and cats in national parks and reserves. These include the need to protect indigenous fauna as well as consideration of the rights of other park users.

In addition to the above a major baiting program is underway to control feral predators such as foxes and cats. These predators have already contributed to the extinction of 10 native mammal species, and threaten many others. Parks and Wildlife aims to reduce feral cat and fox populations through baiting programs using 1080, a poison that does not harm native wildlife but is very poisonous to dogs and cats. Warning signs are placed prominently around baited areas but you should check with your local Parks and Wildlife office to find out which areas are currently baited.

If in doubt as to whether you can take your dog onto any land in Shark Bay, contact the local Parks and Wildife office.
